This study is devoted to the analysis of the impact of the socio-economic status of the family on the educational achievements and motivation of secondary school students. The relevance of the topic is due to the need to identify the factors that determine the academic success of schoolchildren in conditions of social inequality. The purpose of the work is to establish the nature and extent of the relationship between the socio-economic situation of the family and the educational results of students. The tasks included conducting a sociological survey of parents and children (n=500), analyzing school documentation, and expert interviews with teachers (n=20). The methods of descriptive and inductive statistics, content analysis, and grounded theory are used. The results showed that the high socio-economic status of the family as a whole has a positive effect on the academic performance and motivation of schoolchildren, but this relationship is mediated by a number of additional variables (family structure, parental education, involvement in the educational process). It has been established that the material and educational resources of the family significantly affect the availability of high-quality school education. At the same time, the leading role in achieving high educational results is played not so much by status characteristics as by the nature of child-parent relations, academic expectations and the value of education in the family. The results obtained deepen scientific understanding of the mechanisms of educational inequality and can be used to develop programs to support students from families with low socio-economic status. The prospects of the study are related to the cross-cultural analysis of the revealed patterns, the study of the compensatory capabilities of the school in leveling the negative effects of family problems.
