Abstract

The process of forming phonetic skills at the initial stage of learning English is quite complex and should be systematic, purposeful and functionally oriented. The authors note that the formation of the foundations of communicative competence, which is the purpose and content of teaching a foreign language at the initial stage, usually begins with oral forms of communication. Mastering them requires serious attention to the assimilation of the pronunciation characteristics of speaking and to the development of their ability to auditory perception of foreign language speech. This article is devoted to the problem of the formation of phonetic competence at the initial stage of learning English. The paper discusses various methods and approaches that can help students master the basics of pronunciation of sounds and words in English. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the teacher's role in the formation of phonetic competence, as well as problems that may arise when working with students with different levels of language training. Various research methods are used in the work, including the analysis of pedagogical literature and the experience of practical teachers. The results of the study can be useful both for teachers of English, and for students and schoolchildren who are starting to learn this language.
