Abstract

The problem of spiritual and moral education of children in modern society is becoming increasingly acute, both pedagogically and socially. The rapid digitalization of everyday life, the transformation of traditional cultural guidelines, and the increasing pressure on children from information sources significantly complicate the process of developing a stable system of moral values. Under these conditions, the family remains the only institution capable of ensuring continuity, emotional depth, and a personal focus in educational influences – qualities unattainable in any other social space. This article explores the role of the family in the spiritual and moral development of primary school-age children – a period recognized in pedagogical science as sensitive to the acquisition of basic moral norms and values. It is between the ages of 6-7 and 10-11 that children develop their initial understanding of good and evil, justice and duty, respect for others, and love for their country, which subsequently form the core of their moral identity. This paper systematizes the key educational functions of the family – value-guiding, emotionally supportive, traditional-translating, regulatory, modeling, and integrative – and reveals the content of each through specific forms and practices of family interaction. Particular attention is paid to the role of parental example as the most effective mechanism of moral education, as well as the importance of family traditions as a tool for transmitting cultural and spiritual experience from generation to generation. A comparative analysis of the factors that enhance and reduce the effectiveness of family education is provided. It has been established that the educational potential of the family is systemic and is realized only when all its components are aligned: a trusting emotional climate, consistent expectations, the correspondence between adults' words and actions, rootedness in cultural traditions, and a conscious parental stance. The issue of interaction between family and school is examined separately. It is argued that genuine pedagogical partnership – as opposed to formal contact – can greatly enhance the educational impact of both institutions, provided their values are aligned. It is concluded that strengthening the educational potential of the family requires targeted methodological support from the educational institution and a transition to meaningful dialogue between teachers and parents.
