Abstract

In this article, the author examines the problem of non-core employment of engineering university graduates, which is becoming widespread in our country, indicating the need to modernize the content and methodology of educational programs. From a pedagogical perspective, the article analyzes the potential of the new fourth-generation Federal State Educational Standards (FSES), which provide a foundation for creating a flexible, practice-oriented curriculum with a clearly defined core of competencies. The author substantiates his opinion that the introduction of elements of economics and financial literacy into this core contributes not only to the formation of specialized knowledge, but also to the development of universal competencies (UC) and soft skills, which allow young professionals to adapt to the modern labor market as effectively as possible. As a solution, the author proposes the introduction of related (non-core) disciplines into the core of the educational program, using the example of Irkutsk State Transport University. The author analyzes their own experience in developing and implementing the working program for the discipline «Fundamentals of Economics and Financial Literacy» in accordance with the curriculum, and provides a detailed description of the structure, content, and methodological framework of this discipline. The article also justifies the feasibility of teaching non-core subjects in the junior courses. In conclusion, specific steps have been proposed for the successful implementation of this approach in universities, including the use of interdisciplinary projects, the organization of common seminars for faculty members, and the involvement of practicing professionals and potential employers.
