Abstract

Most Chinese research focuses on the analysis of learning algorithms in mobile applications designed for memorizing foreign language vocabulary and on testing their effectiveness. In contrast, this study examines the coverage of professional mechanical engineering vocabulary in four different top-rated Chinese language learning applications: Momo, Baicizhan, Bubei and Shanbei. The material consisted of 30 selected lexical units distributed across five categories: basic terms, polysemantic words, abbreviations, compound words and derivatives. The article also investigates the presence of compound words, derivatives, polysemantic words in their technical meanings, and abbreviations. The study reveals significant gaps in the coverage of professional vocabulary: abbreviations and derivatives were not included in any of the applications, while the technical meanings of polysemantic words are presented inaccurately. The author substantiates the need to improve the vocabulary databases of Chinese top-rated language learning applications, taking into account the professional lexical needs of mechanical engineering students, and offers methodological recommendations for teachers, students and developers of language applications.
