Abstract

The study examines the contradictory impact of early specialization of high school students on the quality of their preparation and the awareness of further educational choices in various types of Russian schools. The purpose of the work is to identify the key problems of the existing profilization system and to assess its actual results in terms of academic achievements, professional self-determination, and equality of educational opportunities. The empirical basis includes federal-level statistical data over several years, local documents and programs from a significant number of schools in different regions, as well as the results of a large-scale survey of students, parents, and teachers and a series of interviews and focus groups with administrative and teaching staff, analyzed using methods of mathematical statistics and qualitative analysis. It is shown that, alongside a general decrease in the proportion of universal classes, there remains a pronounced bias toward humanities and socio-economic tracks, with very slow growth in technological specialization and stagnation in the natural science profile, which does not correspond to the strategic needs of the economy and increases the risk of personnel shortages in high-tech industries. Comparative analysis of academic achievements demonstrates a significant increase in olympiad movement results and functional literacy indicators in major-related subjects among students of specialized classes, accompanied by a small but steady decline in results for a number of general education disciplines, which indicates the risk of one-sided academic preparation. Analysis of the correspondence between the school specialization and the chosen field of higher education revealed a significant share of graduates changing their educational trajectories, especially among those who studied in the humanities and socio-economic tracks, which indicates insufficient effectiveness of career guidance and weak feedback between schools and the higher education system. Additionally, it was found that the implementation of technological and natural science profiles requires substantially higher costs for equipment and personnel compared to universal and humanities classes, leading to an increase in resource inequality between schools and regions. The discussion substantiates the need to move toward more flexible models combining modular curricula, early and continuous support for career choice, and targeted financing of resource-intensive profiles, as well as a reorientation of performance evaluation from narrowly subject-based indicators to a comprehensive system of academic and interdisciplinary competencies in the interest of sustainable development of general education.
