Intercultural dialogue through ensemble playing of wind instruments: practices of Chinese teachers

Abstract

This article examines the role of ensemble playing on wind instruments as a means of intercultural dialogue, based on the practical experiences of Chinese educators. The introduction section justifies the relevance of the topic, underlines the significance of music in developing communication skills and intercultural understanding, and formulates the goal of the study - to identify the features and potential of ensemble playing for fostering intercultural dialogue within an educational environment. The methodological part of the work describes the use of qualitative analysis, observations, and interviews with Chinese educators conducting ensemble playing sessions. Comparative analysis and an analysis of contextual factors that facilitate dialogue among representatives of different cultures were also employed. The research methodology allowed for the identification of both pedagogical strategies and specific methodological techniques aimed at integrating traditional and modern approaches in music education. The results section presents data obtained during field studies and interviews. It was found that ensemble playing on wind instruments contributes not only to musical development, but also to an improved level of communication culture, mutual understanding, and tolerance among students from various cultures. The practices of Chinese educators demonstrate high effectiveness in creating conditions for intercultural interaction, where collective musical activity becomes a tool for socialization and the exchange of cultural values. The discussion of results focuses on the interpretation of the identified phenomena in the context of contemporary educational theory and practice. Prospects for further research in this area are described, with an emphasis on aspects of intercultural pedagogy and potential applications of the developed practices in the international educational space. The authors stress that ensemble playing can serve as an effective tool in addressing issues of integration and cross-cultural exchange, which is especially important in a globalized world. Thus, the article makes a significant contribution to the theory and practice of intercultural dialogue in music education, offering innovative approaches based on the experiences of Chinese educators, and demonstrating the potential of ensemble playing as a means of developing a global communication environment in educational institutions.
