Available online services for learning Chinese by Russian engineers

Abstract

The article addresses the problem of selecting and using online services for learning Chinese by Russian engineers amid the reorientation of professional communications toward interaction with the PRC, where language proficiency becomes a tool for working with technical documentation, terminology, and negotiations without intermediaries. It emphasizes that hieroglyphic writing and tonal phonetics create specific cognitive barriers for adult specialists with an algorithmic thinking style, while mass digital products often replicate everyday scenarios and produce an effect of «false competence» when confronted with real engineering texts. The study compares application architectures, material presentation logic, consolidation mechanics, and the degree of content contextualization, considering andragogical requirements for microlearning and integration of sessions into the work schedule; 12 popular platforms were analyzed, along with user progress dynamics over six months. Quantitative results reveal a sharp asymmetry in the assimilation of basic and professional vocabulary: gamified applications demonstrate satisfactory retention of common units but extremely low retention of technical vocabulary, whereas lexical trainers based on active reproduction and spaced repetitions achieve the highest performance in specialized terminology and course completion. Platforms with video courses exhibit high structural clarity but lower completion rates due to substantial time demands. Separately, the nonlinear dynamics of building an active hieroglyphic vocabulary is demonstrated, featuring a pronounced «plateau» at medium intervals and subsequent skill stabilization after prolonged practice, necessitating special support mechanisms at the critical stage. Economic comparison of paid models indicates the engineering audience's willingness to pay for niche solutions with professional content, given higher satisfaction rates, while corporate LMS reveal a discrepancy between retention and experience quality. The demand for hybrid adaptive systems is substantiated, integrating algorithmic training with authentic technical materials and intelligent personalization tailored to the specialist's profile.
