Abstract

The paper analyzes the psychological and methodological conditions for developing the readiness of students at technical universities for independent research activity in the context of the knowledge economy requirements. The purpose of the study is to identify motivating factors and barriers, as well as to assess the effectiveness of existing pedagogical support practices. The empirical basis includes data from surveys and longitudinal observation of senior students from five technical universities totaling 673 participants, with a control group. Structured interviews with teachers, expert evaluation of student works, and statistical processing using correlation, factor, and comparative analysis were applied. It is shown that at the early stages of study, external utilitarian motivation related to grades and material incentives predominates, whereas by senior years internal professional motives become stronger, though their contribution remains limited. It was found that only a smaller part of students, are guided by cognitive interest and the desire to acquire new knowledge, which indicates the lack of formation of a stable research mindset. Students highly appreciate the accessibility of information resources but are critical of the quality of individual consultations, assistance in mastering research methods, and support for publication activity. Statistically significant positive relationships were established between academic performance and the level of proficiency in searching, processing, and interpreting information, as well as in academic writing skills, which confirms their fundamental nature for successful learning. The analysis of self-assessment of skill development in the course of term projects shows a significant improvement in the ability to plan work and publicly present results, with more modest dynamics in analytical and experimental components. The need to transform the role of the teacher from a controller to a mentor and facilitator, as well as to reform the assessment system toward prioritizing the methodological and creative components of research, is discussed. Directions for the modernization of the educational process have been formulated, including the implementation of adaptive trajectories for the development of research competencies, the expansion of programs for training academic advisors, and deeper integration of project assignments into major disciplines. It is concluded that a coordinated change in psychological and methodological conditions can enhance students’ actual involvement in research activity and ensure the formation of a stable readiness of graduates to solve non-standard professional tasks. The practical significance of the obtained results for the modernization of higher technical education is emphasized.
