Didactic features of teaching European languages in general education schools in China (late 19th – early 20th century)

Abstract

This article examines the didactic features of teaching European languages in general education schools in China during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The aim of the study is to identify and characterize these features within the context of the country’s historical, cultural, and social development. The research employs analytical, historical, logical, and graphical methods. The author substantiates the importance of learning European languages as a tool for interstate communication, with particular emphasis on the role of the Russian language in the development of business and political contacts. The educational system of China is characterized, and the key challenges in the formation of foreign language education, as well as the objectives of implementing relevant curricula, are identified. Drawing on historical experience and the identified didactic features, theoretical recommendations are proposed for improving the methodology of teaching European languages in contemporary general education schools in China. It is concluded that there are significant prospects for the development of foreign language education in China, contributing to the renewal of social, cultural, and economic spheres in the medium and long term.
