A study on the use of watercolor storytelling in original children's picture books in Chinese, starting in 2000

Abstract

Since 2000, Chinese original children's picture books have experienced rapid development, with watercolor emerging as a prominent artistic medium due to its transparency, fluidity, softness, and ethereal quality. This paper examines Chinese original children's picture books from 2000 to the present, employing literature review, case analysis, and comparative analysis to systematically investigate the application of watercolor in narrative construction across three dimensions: technique, color, and form. By analyzing differences in expression across various genres, the study identifies current strengths and limitations in creative practice and proposes targeted recommendations for improvement. Findings indicate that watercolor language effectively enhances plot progression, emotional conveyance, and thematic expression through technical adaptation, chromatic suggestion, and formal articulation. Its integration with local narrative contexts further accentuates the distinctive value of domestic picture books. This research aims to address a gap in interdisciplinary studies linking watercolor art and children's picture book narration, offering practical insights for contemporary creators and contributing to the qualitative advancement and distinctive development of Chinese original children's picture books.
