Abstract

The present study is devoted to investigating the role of creative independent work in mathematics in cultivating a culture of thinking among schoolchildren. In contexts where traditional teaching methods often focus on the reproductive mastery of algorithms, it becomes essential to develop students' abilities for analysis, synthesis, critical reflection, and the search for non-standard solutions. This article argues that creative independent activities, which go beyond routine problems, contribute to the development of key components of a thinking culture-such as flexibility, systemic reasoning, reflection, and research activity. In the pedagogical experiment conducted, the author compared the effectiveness of three teaching formats: the traditional approach (centered on standard problems), an approach based on solving creative tasks of increased complexity, and an interdisciplinary approach integrating mathematics with science and art. To assess progress, quantitative methods (tests measuring levels of logical and creative thinking, performance analysis) and qualitative methods (observation, surveys on engagement and motivation) were employed. The sample included students from various grades whose initial levels were diagnosed in advance. Results demonstrate a significant advantage for approaches that include a creative component. The group working with non-standard problems showed greater gains both in academic performance (an average increase of 1.15-1.45 points) and in levels of creative (6.91 points) and logical thinking (7.18 points), compared to the traditional group (5.82 and 6.49 points, respectively). The interdisciplinary approach proved most effective (7.43 and 7.95 points), confirming the importance of knowledge integration for fostering mental flexibility. Analysis also revealed substantially higher levels of interest, self-confidence, and willingness to study the subject in the creative and interdisciplinary groups. The discussion emphasizes that successfully cultivating a culture of thinking requires creating a supportive environment free from fear of mistakes, considering individual learning styles and age characteristics, and implementing an assessment system that values the problem-solving process as much as the outcome. Key conditions for effectiveness include the gradual increase of task complexity within the "zone of proximal development," a combination of individual and group work, the use of modern technologies, and active student involvement in research projects and competitions. The study concludes that systematically incorporating creative independent work into mathematics education is a powerful means of developing universal thinking skills necessary for successful adaptation in the modern world and fosters intrinsic motivation for learning.
